Every year XXX Dutch soldiers join missions abroad where they need to withstand many physical and mental challenges. Next to excellent equipment and proper training, food plays a crucial role in well-being of those soldiers.

When food is prepared in the field, the food preparation system should fit the way of operation of the military. This means that it should be able to move quickly in rough terrain (forest, desert), under extreme circumstances (-32 to +50 degrees Celcius) and fit a in a standard container size, fitting on a truck with Demountable Rack Offload & Pickup System (DROPS). And it should create little noise and heath radiation.

Provision of food in the field conditions is a complex challenge that requires interdisciplinary solutions. For this reason the Dutch Ministry of Defense, and Alliance of Utrecht University, Eindhoven University of Technology, and Wageningen University & Research, with support of Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy join hands in organizing of the Food 4 Health and Safety Challenge.
